We were scheduled to do some training with both
Danish and British Naval Forces for about two weeks, in the North Sea, before we
actually got any real liberty in Copenhagen. We arrived in Copenhagen on 8 August 1955. We moored up along side
the British Cruiser HMS Glasgow.
There was a lot of activity on the ships pier, where a number of "MAN-OF-WAR"
were tied up. Two American Tin Cans (USS DALY, USS SMALLEY), several British
Destroyers, a submarine, the Cruiser HMS Glasgow and a Aircraft Carrier, along with
several Danish Destroyers.
An Official British Navy photograph of the British
HMS Glasgow, a Southampton Class
Cruiser. I managed to acquire the photograph from the British Imperial War
Museum. It was taken in 1952, as she entered Grand Harbour, Malta.

August 1955. Back the same route we had taken to Denmark from Inverness,
Scotland.

We are approaching the Langelinie Promenade Ship's Pier in Copenhagen 19 August

the ship when we were in Helsinki. I am standing on the Fantail (stern of the
ship) by the after 5"38 Gun Mount (Mount 54) the third sailor from the right.

A view of one of Copenhagen's most famous landmarks,
"The Little Mermaid." As I navigated my way into town on my first day of
liberty in Denmark's "Gem of the Sea," 19 August 1955
A close up of "The Little Mermaid," from a postcard I
bought in Copenhagen. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tale. Denmark's renowned
sculptor, Edvard Erichsen created his famous work of art. She sits on a big
rock, in the Small Boat Marina, looking out to sea, waiting to greet seafaring
men, like this USN TIN CAN SAILOR.
A view that greeted me, as I strolled about
wonderful Copenhagen. On my first day ashore, 19 August 1955: Rosenborg Castle is the
castle of Kobenhagen. Built about 400 years ago by
the Royal Architect Christian 1V. Is now a museum and the site where the Danish Crown Jewels are kept.
I don't recall how I found the park, I just know that
I did a lot of walking. Since I did not know where anything was, I just
meandered around. The park setting around Gefion Fountain in the distance

The Gefion Fountain, according to Danish legend,
Goddess Gefion was allowed by Swedish King Gylfe, to take as much land out of
Sweden as she could plough in a single night. She thought about how could she
gain as much land as possible, she had so little time. Legend has it, that she
transformed her four sons into big strong Oxen. By the dawn of the next new
day, Goddess Gefion had managed to plough the whole Island of Sealand away from
Sweden. Copenhagen 19 August 1955.

I managed to navigate my way to Copenhagen's world
famous Tivoli Gardens. Standing in front of the entrance, a view looking down

Copenhagen Denmark, 19 August 1955. Standing across
Hans Christian Andersen Boulevard. a view of the entrance to the Tivoli Gardens,
as evening shadows fall. The Tivoli, was truly a very beautiful and interesting
place to visit, for this young Tin Can Sailor. Every time I saw a beautiful
girl, I though of Tiina, the beautiful Finn that I met in Helsinki, on 1 August
1955.

1955. The Tivoli was a new and wonderful experience for this young Tin Can
Sailor. A great way to end my first night on liberty in the wonderful city of
Copenhagen, Denmark. Friday 19 August 1955.
A night to remember at the Tivoli Gardens, this is a
hand held shot with my Argus C-4 35mm camera. I guessed at the exposure time and
setting. The famous restaurant "Nimb" in the Tivoli. I did not go inside,
because it was late, close to closing time, I took this photo on my way out of
the beautiful Tivoli Gardens. A beautiful Danish girl ( blond, about 5 feet 5
inches tall ) came up to me, as I was taking the picture, she inquired where I
was from. We talked for a few minutes. She wrote her telephone number on the
back of a small 5"square paper dart target with her lipstick. It was the only
piece of paper I had. I did not call her, my thoughts were of Tiina. The
beautiful Finn that had stolen my heart back in Helsinki. Copenhagen, Friday
19 August 1955.
A much appreciated stop for lunch on the Bus Tour for
this chow hound. The Hellebaek Hotel, (white structure with flag) is famous for
it's Smorgasbord Dining. A view as we approach on foot from where the bus had
to park. Denmark, north of Copenhagen 20 August 1955.
After a great Smorgasbord lunch at the Hellebaek
Hotel, I had some time (while waiting for the other people on the tour bus to
finish their lunch) to roam around out side. I elected to walk down to a nearby
beach, not far from where our bus was parked. It was such a beautiful day to be
out and about. If you look closely, you can see the coast of Sweden in the
distance.
