CHAPTER 9:
TIINA’S AND VIENO’S SUMMER HOLIDAY
IN BEAUTIFUL ITALY
18 MAY – 13 JUNE 1955
Tyyne and her older sister Vieno, had been studying Italian and in the Summer of 1955, they took a lovely holiday together with another girlfriend of theirs and they traveled down to sunny Italy.
Their summer holiday started off on a good note. The weather was perfect for traveling.
Tyyne and her sister Vieno awoke after a sleepless night, they were so excited about a holiday they had both been planning and saving for, for some time. A beautiful sunny warm day greeted them in Helsinki on 18 May 1955.
The first leg of their long awaited dream holiday to Italy was to be via ship. One of Tyyne’s and Vieno’s brothers drove them to the ships pier where their ship was tied up. They were to meet a girl friend of theirs that was also traveling with them on their Italian Holiday. Their first leg was a two day voyage from Helsinki to Copenhagen, Denmark.
The 2nd leg, started on 21 May. It was a long train ride, from Copenhagen all the way down to Rome, Italy. The next leg was another train ride, a short one by comparison, from Rome to Naples on 23 May.
After two enjoyable days in Naples, on 25 May, Tyyne and Vieno and their friend took a several hour boat ride from Naples, to the picturesque Island of Capri off the West Coast of Italy, in the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea. The Island of Capri was the farthest south they traveled in their Italian Holiday. They sailed back to Naples on 28 May on their first leg of their trip back home. They left Naples the next morning 29 May, by train once again, back to Rome.
After a short stay in Rome, they left for Perugia. Perugia, is located in about the middle calf of the leg shape of Italy. This time by bus, on 1 June. After two lovely days in Perugia, on 3 June, they boarded another bus that would take them through the picturesque Italian country side north to the Historic city of Firenze (Florence).
After a lovely stay in Florence, on 5 June, they boarded another bus, this time their destination was the beautiful port city of Venice. On Italy’s East Coast to the Adriatic Sea. After a wonderful two days in Venice, on 8 June, they were on a bus once again, heading west to their last destination in Italy, the ancient and beautiful city of Milan
After two exciting days in Milan, they felt sadness that their time in beautiful Italy had gone by so quickly. On 10 June they boarded a train that would take them on a two day train ride through parts of Northern Europe on their way back to Copenhagen. In Copenhagen, they boarded a ship on 12 June, for their final leg of their journey back home, a two day voyage through the cold blue waters of the Baltic Sea. Back home to Helsinki, in"The Land Of The Midnight Sun"
